Helping prevent identity theft
ID theft occurs when another individual or organisation uses your personal information without your knowledge. Usually this is to support a fraud or deception, with the guilty party using your identity to hide behind - and to gain false access to money.
Identity theft is an important and growing problem, affecting not just individuals but also Government departments and private sector organisations. It often forms part of more serious criminal operations such as people trafficking and drug smuggling. It is estimated that more than 100,000 people are affected by ID theft annually in the UK, costing the British economy over £1.7 billion p.a. (Source: www.identitytheft.org.uk Feb 07)
To help you protect yourself from becoming a victim, the Home Office has launched a website to help you understand its risks and what you can do to avoid them. For more information and some useful contact details, visit www.identitytheft.org.uk
